    What Mettle?

Michael and I were talking just a bit ago about a question that a prospective client had: “What does it really take on our side of the fence?” Most clients know what to expect from their consulting partner based on the letter of agreement, budget schedule, timeline, and deliverables. Figuring out who and what are necessary internally, however, a little bit more of a challenge. This particular prospective client wanted to know what sort of person would be most successful in leading a website relaunch effort and how much time they should expect to spend. I started rattling off a list of things to Michael:

“Communications and project management and change management experience, a strong history and high level of credibility within the institution, the ability to build bridges and say “no” without burning any. Honestly, they need a Susan! Or an Amy! Or an Andrew! Or …”

The list of clients who’ve done a fantastic job managing their project internally got longer, fairly quickly. And so it dawned on me, why not ask some of them directly about how much time it took, what they would do differently, what they wish they’d known when they started the project, and then to share all of that information with our blog community. Stay tuned, then, what may turn out to be a series of Proust questionnaires or chat sessions. And if you’ve got specific questions for them, please send them my way.

    Thanks much, and happy Friday!
