Independent Schools & Social Media

Sep 12, 2009By Michael Stoner

I’m doing research for an article for CASE Currents on how independent schools are using social media and I’m looking for some good examples of schools that are doing something interesting and/or innovative. Not just schools with a Facebook presence, but ones that are really trying to leverage social media tools in interesting and unique ways.

Here are some examples I’m currently following:

    • For example, Northfield Mount Hermon will be pulling content from their Flickr gallery, updates from Facebook, and LinkedIn updates into their new website.

    • George School is crowdsourcing photos for its home page; in the first year, 82 members of the school community have contributed images for its weekly photo gallery.

I’m particularly interested in schools that have woven social media into fundraising or alumni relations initiatives. For examples of the kind of things I’m looking for, read the posts about Nazareth College’s Flight of the Flyers campaign to boost attendence at reunions or Emory University’s Blue Pig campaign aimed at boosting student participation in class giving.

If you have recommendations for me to research, please leave a comment below or send me email: michael.stoner[at]mstoner.com. Thanks!

Whatever. I'm not much interested in cutting edge but what actually works for real people in the real world. Does that make me a bad person?
